Cold and flu season has begun, and with it the onslaught of sore throats, aches and coughs.

From ancient times people have used honey as a natural treatment for various illnesses and disease. This recipe is very common in Japan.

Honey and ginger can be successfully used in treating respiratory diseases. They both have string healing capacities but when taken together their benefits increase.

Furthermore, honey is an excellent medium for transmitting the benefits of herbs such as ginger to the body. Honey and ginger help rid the respiratory system of mucus and ginger also helps stop inflammation. This is also great for warding off the common cold and flu.

Both honey and ginger have their own individual health benefits and the combination of the two provides even more additional bonuses.



Honey helps fight infection and soothes inflamed tissue; is antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and high in antioxidants. Honey may also boost the body’s immune system by aiding in the production of white blood cells. This improves the body’s ability to fight infection and decreases the risk of fevers. The natural sweetness of honey also balances the tartness of the lemon and the ginger’s spice, giving honey, lemon and ginger tea its soothing flavor.

The recipe is quite simple:

Ingredients:

2 lemons (choose organic to avoid pesticides, use only fresh lemons)
1 large "hand" of ginger (choose organic ginger to avoid pesticides)
1 cup of raw honey (local honey is best)

Instructions:

1. Slice lemon thinly, remove seeds.
2. Cut a one inch piece of fresh ginger root into several small slices.
3. Place lemon slices and ginger slices in a jar
4. Pour honey over top.
5. Stir to ensure lemons and ginger are covered.
6. Cap with a plastic top (or layer of plastic wrap between metal lid and jar) to prevent corrosion
7. Sit for a day or longer to allow for lemons and ginger to infuse into the honey.
8. You can keep this mixture for months in the refrigerator.

How to use:
Swallow a spoonful or two of honey syrup to soothe a cough or sore throat.
Stir a heaping tablespoon (or more to taste) into a cup of hot water or lemonade.
Stir a heaping tablespoon (or more to taste) into a cup of hot tea.

* Honey is not safe for babies. Honey should never be given to children under 1 year old.
